Behaviour & Wellbeing

At Bencubbin Primary School, we believe positive behaviour and wellbeing are fundamental to creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment. Our approach focuses on helping students develop confidence, responsibility and respect for themselves and others.

We use proactive, strengths-based practices that support students to make positive choices, build strong relationships and learn from challenges.

Our approach

Behaviour expectations at Bencubbin Primary School are grounded in the Circle of Courage, a holistic framework that recognises every child’s need for:

  • Mastery – developing skills, confidence and a sense of achievement
  • Independence – learning to make responsible and thoughtful choices
  • Belonging – feeling connected, accepted and valued
  • Generosity – contributing positively to others and the school community

These principles align closely with our school values of Responsibility, Initiative, Safety and Kindness (RISK), which guide behaviour, learning and relationships across the school.

Rather than relying on punishment, our approach is restorative and supportive. Students are encouraged to reflect on their behaviour, understand its impact on themselves and others, and develop strategies to make positive choices moving forward.

A chart titled "The Circle of Courage" at Bencubbin Primary School displays four pillars: Responsibility, Initiative, Safety, and Kindness, each with related qualities and sample phrases in a color-coded grid.

Behaviour expectations and support

All students are supported to:

  • Follow school rules and behaviour expectations
  • Treat others with respect and kindness
  • Attend school regularly and engage positively in learning
  • Take responsibility for their actions

When concerns arise, staff work collaboratively with students and families to provide guidance, support and appropriate strategies. Where necessary, additional supports or plans may be put in place to help students succeed.

Working together

Positive behaviour is most effective when school and home work in partnership. We encourage families to model respectful communication, support school expectations and raise any concerns early so they can be addressed constructively.
